What to Wear at Night When You Take Off Your Compression Garments

If your specialist has told you to take your compression off at night, sleep in something loose, soft and low-pressure that lets your skin breathe. After a day under firm fabric, the last thing your legs and tummy need is a tight waistband or elastic biting at the thigh. Shorts-style underwear or loose nightwear in a breathable fabric is a good place to start.

Should I take my compression off at night?

Follow your own specialist’s advice. NHS lymphoedema leaflets say most people are advised to remove their garments at bedtime, and not to sleep in them unless their therapist says so (Dorset County Hospital NHS; UHNM NHS).

For lipoedema, Lipoedema UK explains that compression helps manage symptoms rather than changing the shape of the legs (Lipoedema UK).

Why does what I sleep in matter?

When the compression comes off, your skin has been under steady pressure all day. Anything tight at bedtime simply adds a new pressure line.

One NHS leaflet also suggests moisturising at night, so you want fabric that won’t cling to freshly creamed skin (UHNM NHS).

What should I look for in night underwear?

  • A soft, enclosed waistband that doesn’t leave a mark.
  • No tight leg elastic. A shorts shape sits on the thigh instead of cutting in at the crease.
  • Breathable fabric such as modal or cotton.
  • Room to change. Swelling can shift overnight, so choose a fit that feels easy, not snug.

Shorts or nightdress?

Both can work. A nightdress keeps everything loose. Shorts add a soft layer between the thighs, which some people find more comfortable if their legs rub.

One customer who wears compression every day told me she now sleeps in her Cosy Charlotte shorts as well as wearing them under her leggings.

How Cuurve designs for this
